Breast Augmentation Revision Surgery with Gummy Bear Implants

Technology moves at such a fast pace that it can seem virtually impossible to keep up. It seems like there are constantly new innovations or updated versions of current products on the market. A good example of this can be seen in computer technology in terms of electronics. We have reached a stage where the average smart phone has more capability than desktop computers from a mere 10 years ago.

The same also holds true for innovations in cosmetic surgery. A good example of this can be seen in advances in breast augmentation implant technology. In early 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates food, drugs and medical devices, approved cohesive gel breast implants for use in patients ages 22 or older.

Why Are the Advantages of Cohesive Gel Implants?

Cohesive gel implants have a consistency not unlike the Gummy Bear popular candy, giving them their nickname. They have a more solid form than saline or silicone gel implants. In fact, they will keep their shape even if cut in half. They have more of a teardrop shape than the rounder silicone or saline implants, with a thicker bottom that tapers to a thinner top. This shape is a better match to the shape of the patient’s actual breast. The cohesive gel is less likely to pucker or ripple when compared to silicone gel or saline implants. This may also reduce the chances of capsular contraction around the implant, lessening the risk of implant hardening and reducing the need for additional surgery. Furthermore, the cohesive gel implants will not leak, due to the nature of the filler material. Finally, cohesive gel implants have a more natural look and feel than silicone gel or saline implants.

What Are the Disadvantages of Cohesive Gel Implants?

Cohesive gel implants require a slightly longer incision for insertion when compared to saline implants, because the cohesive silicone gel implants come pre-filled.

Revision Breast Implant Procedure for Cohesive Gel Implants

There is no reason why women with silicone gel or saline implants cannot change to cohesive gel implants. Dr. Vincent Marin recommends that patients replace other types of implants with cohesive gel during revision surgery. In a revision procedure for cohesive implants, Dr. Marin will make an incision into the inframammary crease (the point at which the bottom portion of the breast meets the chest wall) or around the areola. He will then remove the current implants and replace them with high quality cohesive gel implants.

In revision surgery, cohesive gel implants produce beautiful and natural looking results for patients. Dr. Marin has found that they correct aesthetic issues and result in fewer complications, making them the implant of choice for breast implant revision patients.

Medical advances are constantly improving the field of cosmetic surgery with new techniques, approaches, and materials. Cohesive gel breast implants will allow women to have breasts that look and feel more natural, with less risk of rupture or displacement.
