Few new technologies really change any surgical procedure, but the ones that do are often the most simple. A tool we have recently begun to use more frequently is the Keller Funnel, a tool used to deliver silicone breast implants into a patient with little “trauma” or stretch to the incision. Saline breast implants are inserted deflated and filled through small incisions and thus the scar can be somewhat smaller in saline augmentations. Saline implants, however, are firmer, less natural and prone to visible “rippling.” Avoiding the problems with saline implants, while keeping the smaller scar benefit is ideal. The Keller funnel allows surgeons to insert the pre-filler silicone implant into the breast through the smallest breast incision with little effort and minimal trauma to the tissues. This results in better scars, faster healing and happier patients!
The funnel functions much like a cake-decorating funnel and it is lined to facilitate the slide of the implant into the breast. The funnel can work with smooth or textured implants as well as the “gummy bear” implants yet to be released by the FDA into the US market.
The proposed benefits of funnel use are:
- Shorter incision lengths
- Improved comfort and faster healing
- No touch technique
- More choices for incision placement
- Reduced force on the implant and incision
