Whether it is Jennifer Lopez or Kim Kardashian, the butt has become the most sought-after body part we are seeing every day. Women are embracing the fuller curve of their rear ends and seeking to make them even more curvaceous.
There are two ways we can adjust the size and shape of the buttock. The first is with the use of a solid silicone implant placed beneath the gluteal muscles. This technique is reserved for those patients who do not have enough fat to undergo the Brazilian Butt Lift. In this post, we will focus on the BBL surgery.
In a BBL surgery, a patient’s own fat (and the patient must have “enough” fat to adequately volumize the buttock) is harvested through traditional liposuction techniques and then processed to remove impurities, oils and ruptured fat cells to help limit inflammation and enhance survival. We routinely use the PureGraft system by Cytori as it has been shown to produce some of the nights’ success rates in the industry. The beauty of this aspect is that patients get the benefit of liposuction at the same time as increasing the volume of the buttock.
We seek to reduce the areas around the buttock (hips, waist, lower back, inner and outer thighs) to make the buttock look relatively bigger – even before we begin to inject the fat. Then, once the fat is processed, we re-inject the fat in a manner to help reshape the buttock in the most attractive manner. This needs to be individualized for each patient since every buttock is slightly different. This is accomplished through very small incisions that normally heal to be completely undetectable in several months.
The combination of removing fat and adding fat in the area of the buttocks helps to “double” increase the overall effect of the enhancement. This helps to provide the most attractive and shapely results.
With any type of fat grafting procedure, not all of the fats that we inject will survive. In most cases, approximately 50-60% of what we inject will survive. This is because this is a complicated process of the body growing new blood vessels to help keep those new fragile cells alive. We do try and “over treat” where possible to achieve the best results, but much like your front lawn – only so many seeds will survive in the soil. You cannot just add more to an already crowded space.
Most patients see their final results in the 3-6 month period. The fat that survives is yours forever and will behave like normal fat. If you lose weight, you may lose some volume in the buttock, and the reverse is also true.
