Otoplasty Costs

The ear has been the subject of much ridicule. In cases in which children, teens, and adults do not have perfectly shaped ears, whether as a result of genetics, injury, or illness, they can seek treatment. In some cases, the lobes may be misshapen or different sizes, the entire ear structures may malformed, or (most common with infants) the tops of the ears may be pointed, giving an “elf ear” effect. An otoplasty (ear cosmetic surgery) can reshape the ears into a more natural shape. Find out how much the otoplasty procedure costs at the San Diego practice of Dr. Vincent Marin.

Otoplasty Procedure

An otoplasty may involve the use of small incisions or skin grafts (generally from behind the ear) in order to reshape it. This procedure can usually be done on an outpatient basis with only a local or general anesthetic, depending on the extent of work needed. Recovery is generally quick, and the most common side effects are bruising and swelling of the ear. These can be alleviated with the use of ice, cold compresses, and the herb Arnica montana. Most swelling and bruising should subside within a week after surgery, and patients should start to see the final shape of their ear at that time. However, it may take up to a month for the ear to settle into its final shape.

Surgical Costs

Dr. Marin charges $4,500 to $6,500 for an otoplasty procedure, depending on the extent of work needed and the type of anesthesia used. This price includes Dr. Marin’s fees, as well as that of the anesthesiologist and any overnight costs, if needed. His office accepts cash, check, and all major credit cards as forms of payment.

Insurance coverage: In some cases, insurance may cover the cost of an otoplasty, if it is the result of an injury or illness. For example, if a part of the ear is removed as a result of injury, medical insurance may cover the cost of cosmetic reconstruction. Dr. Marin’s staff is happy to assist in gathering paperwork and filing the claim for insurance payment.

CareCredit financing: CareCredit has worked in the health care financing business, including cosmetic surgery, since 1987. It provides no-interest and low-interest financing plans for terms ranging anywhere from six to 24 months. CareCredit sets up its payment schedule similar to that of any other major credit card. Depending on the plan, as long as monthly payments are made on time, patients will not be charged interest or late fees. The application process is simple and quick, and most people are accepted for the program. Dr. Marin’s office can get approval for patients during their initial consultation with Dr. Marin.
