Types of Lifts and Implants
Since this procedure combines two surgeries (breast lift and augmentation), you may have to face more choices before going under the knife. You and Dr. Marin should reach a common decision regarding which type of lift and type of implant you will have in your procedure.
There are four main types of breast lifts:
In this type, a small crescent-shaped part of the skin above the areola will be removed to elevate the nipple. The incision will be no larger than what will be used for a standard breast augmentation and is very well tolerated. Breast implants can be easily inserted through this type of incision. These are for women who have subtle breast droops.
This type of lift is designed to elevate the nipple while minimizing the scarring that may occur. The scarring will be confined to the edge of the areola, encircling it entirely. Large areola can be reduced to a more youthful size and position. Also known as concentric mastopexy, this is for women who have problems about their large areolas. Implants can be easily placed through this type’s incisions. The scarring is also very well tolerated
Circumvertical “Lollipop” Lift
This breast lift type involves the use of a vertical component especially for patients who have an extensive droop in their breasts. It is called such because it takes the scars take the final shape of a lollipop. While there may be a bit more scarring, this is one of the most effective procedures to restore youthful breasts. Our surgeon may easily insert implants through this incision during the same surgery.
Among the types of lift, the most powerful is a standard breast lift. This procedure is commonly reserved for breast with the most significant droop. With an anchor-shaped scar, standard breast lifts give significant lifting ability – ultimately providing the most dramatic breast improvement. This improvement can be furthered by adding implants which can easily be done simultaneously with the surgery.
In the breast augmentation part of the procedure, you have to decide what type of implant is best suited for you.
There are two main types of implants:
Saline implants are inserted empty in your breast pocket. Once placed, it will be filled with sterile salt water. Because of this, the scar will be relatively shorter. This also gives you more volume choices. Saline breast implants also do not have silent rupture or the slow leak of the contents of an implant – they simply deflate to indicate rupture.
Silicone implants are inserted in your breast pocket pre-filled with silicone gel. Although it may produce a slightly bigger scar than saline implants, silicone implants have a more natural feeling have a lower risk of rippling. This type of implant is suited for women who are petite and have small breasts.
Undergoing Breast Lift with Implant Surgery
Generally, a breast lift with implant surgery lasts for 2-4 hours, almost the same as a normal breast lift procedure. You will be put either under general or local anesthesia with sedation for your comfort throughout the surgery.
The incisions will be made based on the type of breast lift that you have decided with Dr. Marin. Whichever type of breast lift you chose, Dr. Marin is highly trained in minimizing possible scarring that may occur.
Your implants will then be inserted to fill the extra skin of your breasts, restoring the fullness of the upper area of your chest. It may either be placed above or below the chest muscles – both of which have their fair share of advantages and disadvantages.
Finally, your incisions will be closed with dissolvable sutures, and drains will be placed beneath your breast to get rid of excess fluid that may collect. The operated site will be covered with surgical dressings, and you will have to wear the surgical bra that Marin Aesthetics will provide you. By performing both procedures, you will be more than satisfied with more aesthetically-appealing, youthful breasts.
After Your Breast Lift with Implants
It is normal for you to feel tired and sore immediately after the procedure. This is an outpatient procedure so you may be required to ask a family member or a close friend to escort you from the La Jolla facility to your home.
Dr. Marin will prescribe medications that will relieve any possible pain that you may experience during your recovery.
Recovery and Scarring
Recovery from breast lift with implants may vary from one person to another, but the positive thing about combining both procedures is that you will only have one recovery period. Most patients return to work after a week. You are not allowed to perform physically stressful activities until the 3rd or 4th week after your surgery. Here are some useful aftercare tips:
- Do not drive during the first week of your recovery or exert too much effort on your upper extremities.
- You are allowed to take short showers, on the condition that your dressings should remain dry.
- Do not submerge your wounds in bathtubs, pools, and Jacuzzis.
- For the first 6 weeks, have extra pillows on your back to help you reduce the swelling.
- You may do light activities only after the first 2 weeks of your procedure. Strenuous activities should be done 3-4 weeks after surgery.
- Do not smoke for the next few weeks because this impedes healing.
The postoperative scarring depends on the type of breast lift and the type of breast implant that you chose. The technique that produces the least scarring is the peri-areolar breast lift. As for the implants, the saline implants give shorter scars compared to silicone-filled ones.
The extent of scarring is also largely dependent on the position or shape of the breast at the time of your surgery. If the nipple is in a relatively good or elevated position, often tightening the skin through smaller incisions is possible. However, if the nipple is pointing in a downward direction, more work is required to restore you to an attractive, youthful breast shape, and this frequently involves a longer scar.
Either way, it is important to remember that avoiding direct sunlight contributes to the rate of the scar from fading.
Your New Look After Breast Lift with Implants
It may take at least 2-3 months before the swelling to subside and for you to see the final form of your breasts. The results of breast lift are long-lasting, with the 10-year lifespan of a breast implant. Should it need a replacement, only a minor procedure will follow. After the swelling subsides, you may enjoy amazing results such as perkier and more youthful breasts and enhanced curves.
