San Diego Chin Augmentation
Chin implant surgery is an effective and successful operation designed to treat a weak or unbalanced chin. Occasionally, this problem is related to the shape or size of the jaw and the appropriate correction is related to altering the bones themselves. However, in the majority of cases this can be solved by the insertion of a solid silicone implant to overly the bone. San Diego chin augmentation surgeon Vincent Marin can place an implant to help to balance the face as well as nose, and the surgery can be done in a subtle, but effective manner.
Chin Implant Candidates
The best candidates for this surgery are patients who have a normal jaw (your teeth fit together normally) and merely insufficient projection of the lower 1/3 of the face. Often, our San Diego chin augmentation patients are uncomfortable having their photo taken from the side or profile, but may not have a problem when looked at from the front. Under these conditions, a small implant can be placed over the bone to balance and “strengthen” the lower face. Facial imaging software can be helpful in determining the perfect size of implant and help patients feel comfortable about their decision to undergo chin implant surgery.

Chin Implant Surgery
Chin implant or mentoplasty surgery is an outpatient surgery performed under local anesthetic with sedation or can be accomplished with a general anesthetic under the supervision of a Board Certified anesthesiologist. The implant is inserted through a small incision underneath the chin (I do not go through the mouth as I feel the amount of bacteria can contribute to a higher incidence of an infection) and secured in place. No dressing other than steri-strips are applied and the patient will use a cold compress for several days.
Chin Implant Recovery and Results
After one week, the sutures are removed and our San Diego chin augmentation patients are able to return to normal activities. There is expected swelling that gradually resolves over two to three weeks as the implant takes it final shape. After completing the process, most patients wonder why it took them so long to make the decision to improve their facial balance and feel comfortable having a photo taken from any angle. Mentoplasty surgery is frequently combined with rhinoplasty surgery as both of these procedures work well in producing a balanced and harmonious facial shape.
