eyes glowing eyelid surgery

Both men and women want to stay looking younger. But frequently, the eye area can easily give your age away – or worse, make you look even older. Baggy or droopy eyelids and a few crow’s feet around them can also make you look like you are always “tired.”

Eyelid surgery is a minimally-invasive operation designed to address these concerns. With a relatively short downtime, it can make you look years younger by reducing excess skin and fat around your eyelid area. In fact, eyelid surgery is one of the most popular procedures, second only to rhinoplasty.

How Is Eyelid Surgery Done?

There are various techniques that can be used in eyelid surgery, each targeting a specific problem area. Lower eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat from the lower eyelids. But if there is no skin to be removed, your surgeon will create an incision along the lash line or on the inside of your eyelids. This method is used for removing or repositioning excess fat.

Upper eyelid surgery can be very helpful in improving the appearance of upper lid skin excess and bulging fat. It can also address droopy eyelids that impair your vision. Your surgeon will make incisions along the upper lid crease, where the scars will be invisible. Excess upper eyelid fat can also be removed using this method. The incision often is completely hidden in an existing “crows foot” wrinkle.

Double eyelid surgery is for patients who have no eyelid creases. This technique alters the structures and removes excess fat from the upper eyelid, giving patients more symmetric and prominent almond-shaped eyes. This is often performed in Asian patients.

How Can You Benefit from Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure that improves the look of tired eyes. It involves very minimal incisions to remove excess skin, fat, and muscle. It is also considered as a functional operation since excess skin around the eye area can affect your peripheral vision.

There are other benefits that you can get from eyelid surgery such as:

  • Enhances the natural contour of the eyes
  • Makes you look younger
  • Improves the appearance of your baggy or droopy eyes
  • Has very minimal scarring
  • Has short downtime
  • Gives long-lasting results
  • Cost-efficient without the use of general anesthesia
  • Improves your self confidence

How Do You Prepare For Eyelid Surgery?

To ensure that both of you are on the same page, it is always best to communicate your expectations with your prospective surgeon. They will then determine if eyelid surgery is the proper procedure for you.

Before your eyelid surgery, you will need to discuss your medical history with a healthcare professional. They will need to check first your past and current eye conditions, as well as diabetes, circulatory or thyroid problems. They will also need to know about your current medications and consumption of alcohol, tobacco, or prohibited drugs.

Your surgeon may require you to have a complete eye examination, which might include testing tear production and getting the measurements of your eyelids.

How is the Aftercare?

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure. Once you are cleared by your surgeon, you can go home on the day of the operation after spending a few hours in recovery at the surgery clinic. You will, however, need someone to drive you home and be with you for the first 24 hours.

You may experience mild discomfort for the first few days. Keep your head elevated, and you can use ice packs for an hour to alleviate the bruising and swelling. Please do not forget to apply ointments as prescribed to avoid getting infections or complications.

Due to very minimal incisions and lack of general anesthesia, your recovery from the eyelid procedure will not be as difficult as other operations. Even if such is the case, you will still need to rest and take things easy. You can go back to work after five days following the surgery, but please avoid doing any strenuous activities for the next three weeks.
