Liposuction on Thin Women – Can It Be Done?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove unwanted fat from localized deposits beneath the skin. A recent segment on NBCs Today show discussed a patient who underwent the procedure despite being a size 2. The concerns raised were that this could be slippery slope as patients then continually try and change each and every little thing that bothers them.

In reality, thin women who exercise regularly or have little excess fat are actually the “ideal” candidates for liposuction. This is not a weight-loss procedure as fat weighs very little compared to muscle or bone and should not be used for patients who are grossly overweight. Thin women who have small persistent areas of concern are ideal as they usually do not need much removed, have better skin quality and the amount of skin contraction is less.

Liposuction allows us to contour and reshape the distribution of fat genetically predetermined in each patient. This is more easily accomplished in women closer to their ideal weight. There needs to be a real “excess” of fat in order to proceed, but if this is confirmed by your physician, then proceeding forward can be done without hesitation.

In conclusion, liposuction is a wonderful procedure when performed safely on the proper candidate. This needs to be after a full consultation and discussion with your surgeon. And just because you are a size 2, it doesn’t mean that you should be excluded from liposuction because you take good care of yourself. It wont make you a better person or fix your relationship, but it might make you feel better in a bikini or that little black dress.
